Over the years the definition of SEO has surely changed. Years ago everyone approached it like it was a giant science project and today it is approached for the most part like a marketing effort. Unfortunately we still see individuals and companies really butchering the craft of SEO and giving it a bad name by using shotty business practices and spammy efforts to try and “market” their websites.

Here are my ideas of the drastic differences among taking a less than stellar approach to growing any business and taking a high-quality marketing approach to your overall search engine optimization movement.

Everyone seems to have a special approach on how to get from point A to point B; some are worth mentioning and some are just downright disrespectful to the industry. The SEO industry is very important to keep clean and some out there really give SEO people a bad image.

Here are some differences between good SEO and bad SEO.

Keyword Research

Good SEO

Putting together a combination of soaring search volume keywords along with long tail keyword phrases and also some low search volume keywords elegantly and strategically through your website.

Bad SEO

Simply going after one word keyword for each page of your website eager you will be at the top of the search results for only high search volume keywords.

Writing a Meta Tag

Good SEO

Crafting a friendly user focused meta title tag in good taste using a targeted keyword phrase that is 60 web characters or less.

Bad SEO

Taking your meta title tag and over stuffing it with your industry keywords thinking it will work to your advantage when it comes time to rank in the search results.

Writing a Meta Tag Description

Keeping your website traffic in mind so your message can be heard when a website visitor reads your meta tag description in the search results. All this while utilizing your targeted keywords for that specific page.

Taking a spammy approach and over stuffing your meta tag descriptions with the intentions of just trying to achieve rankings and forgetting about the overall user experience.

Attractively utilizing keywords and long tail phrases into your existing content so a person can actually understand it and can still make a connection with what your business is trying to say or communicate.

Recording a horribly produced video just for the sake of making a video and not really having any substance to it with the only intention being to take up a parking space in the search results.

Building a Facebook fan page that is inviting to your audience and your community where you can spread the message to your followers about your business in any way you feel necessary.

Attempting to send thousands of friend requests from a personal profile that has been structured to come from a business because it is easier to send out a request that way. This will get your Facebook account shut off.

By posting useful information for your audience and your industry into your Twitter stream that doesn’t consist of just self promotional items.

Bad SEO

Sending out self promotional messages or affiliate links all day long without adding any substance to the conversation is not going to help anyone.

Blog Commenting

Good SEO

Good blog commenting always ads to the overall conversation that is occurring within that blog post. Leaving behind a few good sentences that actually add value is the way to go.

Bad SEO

Short little messages letting someone know they have a great post is not going to add any value and it is an approach that adds absolutely no value to anything.

These are some of the areas that I think need to be looked at when you are starting to market your business online. Take the right approach when you first get going because you will be happy you did. Taking a tasteful approach allows you to build your brand and also impacts the way others in your industry will view you as a business.

I get a lot of questions about backlinks….what they are, which are better, how to get them etc. Below you’ll find some random facts about backlinks:

• Definition: Backlinks are links on other sites which link to one of your site’s pages. For example, if I put a link on my diggpoints.com web site to Carshubb blog, Carshubb site has a backlink from me.

• Backlinks have more relevance in Google’s eyes if their anchor text contains keywords related to the page being linked to.

• On that note, when placing links to your site in the bio section of articles, etc., don’t always use the same anchor text; switch it up. It’s even OK to sometimes use “click here” for anchor text. The reason is that you don’t want to create patterns. Google likes things to look “natural”.

• 10 backlinks from 10 different domains are more powerful than 10 backlinks from one domain…all things being equal.

• One backlink from a high PR site, say 5 or 6, “could” be worth more than dozens of backlinks from very low PR sites.

• Backlinks from non-related sites offer little relevance and are of little value. For example, if your uncle has a dog training site and he places a link on his site to your airplane site, it won’t be worth much.

• Now days, reciprocal linking is significantly discounted by Google. One-way links are much more valuable than reciprocal links…all things being equal.

• You cannot be penalized by Google for getting too many backlinks IF you get them manually by bookmarking, article marketing, web 2.0 sites, etc. (or even if you hire a VA to manually get them). However, you CAN be penalized if you participate in any type of “paid” linking systems. Do not participate in systems that auto populate mass numbers of websites with your link. And never pay for links that do not include a “no-follow” tag.

Set a goal of getting 5 to 10 backlinks a week and you’ll be ahead of 95% of your competitors in that respect.

One of the more exciting features of the latest recession has been the collapse of tax revenue flowing into the coffers of the individual US states. Sales are down so there’s less tax take there. Property values have crashed through the floor so, where tax is a percentage of valuation, the tax take has fallen – with so many properties foreclosed and families unemployed, payment of the tax has been difficult to enforce. People have been earning less and businesses have made less profit so, again, less income tax. Put everything together and many states are effectively bankrupt, their bonds reduced to junk status by the credit rating agencies. Yet there is no political will to really grasp the nettle of tax increases. If the electorate want the same level of services from the state, they have to pay for them. If they genuinely will not pay, they must be prepared to accept real cuts in the quality of the services. Perhaps this recession will finally break through the stubborn refusal to pay a larger percentage of income as tax. While we wait for this revolution, individual states are playing around the margins to save a few dollars here, and raise a few dollars there. Their theory is that federal government will not allow them to fail. Like AIG, many of the states are “too big”. So bail-out money will save them from having to make the hard decisions.

This has not prevented some states from getting creative. In New Hampshire, Governor John Lynch has a new policy. To help bridge the gap between solvency and insolvency, he’s proposing to legalize online gambling. The detail of the plan is to be announced soon, but it’s already controversial. Ignoring the problems created by the federal law clamp-down on the transfer of funds for gambling purposes, the Governor has been caught in a classic flip-flop. Not so long ago, the lawmakers who represent the real-world casino interests proposed a bill to licence some 17,000 slots and table games. The recession was not yet in its full glory and the hole in the budget was not today’s gaping chasm. The Governor decided to veto the bill.

He gave two reasons. The first a simple calculation that there were already a significant number of machines in the state and licensing more was unlikely to produce a real increase in revenue. It would only share out the same money among more machines. But it’s the second reason that has landed him in trouble. He said the bill would lead to an increase in gambling. Whether he was concerned at the rising level of addiction, the risk of more young people being tempted into gambling or he had some moral objections is not clear. The bill died. The new proposal to legalize online gambling is likely to make gambling more accessible. If people have to travel to specific locations, their behavior can be more closely monitored and controlled. The age of players can be verified. Operators can stop someone when they have obviously lost too much. Allowing gambling from PCs, lap and palm top machines, and Blackberrys is opening the flood gates. Playing online slots, people can burn through a lot of money very quickly without anyone to stop them. The Governor can’t have it both ways. If proliferating gambling is a bad thing, legalizing online gambling is a bad thing. While he decides how to answer, we can all have fun playing slots wherever we find them.

In many ways, the US has the best and the worst system of federal and state governments in the world. Arguably it has the qualities of being the best because, even though it’s a two-horse race, there’s enough of a difference between the political intentions of the successful candidates to make life interesting. But it’s one of the worst because of the level of corruption in the lawmaking following elections. Money speaks loud behind the scenes with different lobbying groups pressuring the elected representatives to deliver on the promises they made to get the campaign funds. For these purposes, it makes no difference which party you look at. All the individuals at every level in the political system depend on “donations” to get elected. When it comes to the world of gambling, the politics get particularly complicated. For individual states, the revenue derived from the different forms of licensed gambling helps avoid complete financial meltdown. Yes, there’s a recession, but this has only slowed the flow of money into gambling. Unlike other sources of tax revenue, the gamblers of America are helping balance budgets. But there are different interested parties. In one corner stand the real world casino operators who want the least possible regulation on their activities. Their group is not united because the casinos on Indian land have advantages and, some say, represent unfair competition. We should not forget the other sites who can get licences to run slots. In another corner stand the racing interests. They are long-standing political players and also want the maximum freedom to run their own betting operations with the least interference from states. This blurs into another group that runs betting operations on other sporting events. While a more distant group runs online casinos.

As an example of the conflict of interests, let’s go to Massachusetts where there’s a new bill in the state House to establish two new real world casinos. As always, the declared intention is to generate more revenue for the state. To maintain a monopoly for the land-based casino operations, the bill proposes to criminalize all online gambling. It will be an offense for any resident of Massachusetts to place or accept a wager placed by a telecommunication device, no matter where they may be located. You will realize, of course, this includes all telephone betting and would hit the racing and sports betting operations. Not surprisingly, this has stirred up an intense lobbying exercise.

Real world operations are preferred because they are easier to police and monitor when it comes to collecting the tax or levy. Once operations disappear down telephone lines or into the internet, they can be based anywhere. This seriously complicates the collection of any tax. States like to keep their worlds simple. They want the maximum revenue from licensed gambling with the lowest possible cost for collection. Just crossing state lines makes collection more difficult. If casino games are offered from outside US territory, tax cannot be collected. That’s one of the reasons why the federal government clamped down on the use of credit cards and other easy payment methods. It forced more operations onshore where they could be taxed. Whether you agree with this approach to balancing the budgets is irrelevant. Casino games are seen as the easy way to raise money without upsetting the electorate. Imagine a world without gambling and hear the roar of anger if states announced an increase in sales tax.

Popularity of target keyword

A good example is the point number 3 above ; if your web copy is about “Dog food” for example, you can’t optimize using “Dog chow” because people hardly search using the term.

There are various free search engine optimization tools that you can use to locate proper targeted phrases and key words. Some are:

Google Keyword Tool: This is a great tool that you can use when brainstorming for keywoord phrases.

Overture by Yahoo: a great tool for keyword brainstorming and popularity assessment.

Word Tracker: a great tool for competitive analysis and popularity assessment of targeted keywords.

Step 2. competitive intelligence

The second crucial step in SEO is competitive intelligence, to learn who your competition is. SEO work is mostly focussed on individual pages within a website. This means that you may end up locating other sites selling similar products with phrase like “Dog food”, just keep in mind that your competition could be more specialised. Use Google and Yahoo to find out what comes up when you search using your target key phrase.

Step 3. Write your web copy

Search engine optimization is not all about meta tags. Take the following focused approach to search engine optimization:

* Include your target phrase twice in the meta title tag and ensure that the title is “clickable”.

* Add the target phrase twice in the meta description.

* Add the target phrase in the meta keywords.

* Add the target phrase in the title or headline for your page.

Step 4. Promote Your Site

Make sure that when you announce your page, you use your target phrase in both the link text and any explanatory text.

Step 5. Check Your Results and Modify

If the major search engines don’t craw your site on time them submit your site URL to them.
